Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus Denounces City of St. Cloud’s Refusal to Recognize Pride Month

The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus strongly condemns the City of St. Cloud’s decision to block a Pride Month proclamation by imposing a blanket “pause” on all proclamations. This move effectively silences LGBTQ+ voices during a month meant to honor their history and resilience, and it is especially offensive given that the policy will be reviewed on June 12, the anniversary of the Pulse nightclub massacre.

“This is not neutrality. It’s an attempt at erasure,” said Kristen Browde, President of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus. “By deliberately stalling a Pride Month proclamation, St. Cloud has chosen to ignore and seeks to invalidate the lives, history, and contributions of LGBTQ+ Floridians. It’s an insult to our community and a shameful retreat from inclusivity. And ultimately it will not work. Our pride will not be diminished by a small minded action.”

Pride Month is recognized nationwide as a celebration of love, identity, and equality. In Florida, it holds even deeper significance as we remember the 49 lives lost at Pulse. Choosing this moment to shut down recognition is not only tone-deaf, it is harmful.

We stand with Deputy Mayor Shawn Fletcher, St. Cloud’s first openly gay councilmember, who has been a steadfast advocate for inclusion. We also stand with every LGBTQ+ resident who deserves to feel seen, safe, and respected in their own city.

We call on St. Cloud’s leadership to reverse this decision and recommit to building a Florida that values everyone. Pride is not controversial. Pride is community.
